Sprinters' delight--or will a break spoil the day? Racers will hit the highest point (so far) of this year's tour at 4,906-foot Mill Creek Summit, but the real action will take place after they descend the Angeles Crest and roll into Pasadena for five 5-mile Rose Bowl circuits. The area is aptly named; it's set in a natural basin featuring short, punchy climbs. "A good break could get away early," says BMC Racing's Tony Cruz, who rides there often. "With the right 15 to 20 guys, it could be decisive."
HOT TIP: Cruz is partial to the intersection of Angeles Forest Highway and the Angeles Crest Highway, where riders will top a short climb before the final descent. But even he concedes it's hard to resist the allure of the finish. "The racers will come through five times and there are a lot of good vantage points," he says. Today's a good day for the kind of rider who excels in hilly Classics: Columbia's George Hincapie or Saxo Bank's Jens Voigt are among the racers to watch.
