Seattle, WA: Ride Around Mount Rainier

Ride Around Mount Rainier in One Day, the premier ultra-marathon cycling event in the Pacific Northwest, normally circumnavigates the Queen of the Cascades. Due to extensive flooding in 2007, organizers were forced to re-route the ride. Seeking to match the length, the difficulty, and the majesty of the original ride, the Redmond Cycling Club sent riders on an epic route that included some of the most stunning scenery in Washington State.

This challenging route (read: 143 miles and 10,000 feet of elevation gain) climbs through sub-alpine forests and descends toward Enumclaw on Mud Mountain Dam Road, a brilliant, swoopy descent. Prepare to be awed by the surrounding scenery at every turn. At 14,410 feet, glacier-capped Mount Rainier--known locally as "The Mountain"--dominates the landscape.

To self-support this ride, park a car at the Crystal Mountain turn-off to restock food and water both coming and going. This route starts and ends at Enumclaw High School.

At 6,400 feet, this is the highest paved road in Washington state and arguably one of the most beautiful. The alpine meadows of the area around Sunrise sit as an emerald belt between the ice, rock and snow above and the verdant forests below.

Note to ride planners: Try to get the highway department to schedule road striping for another day. Worse than the wet paint was fighting for road space with these slow-moving trucks.

Steep Grade

Location: 47.110619°, -121.482353°
Did somebody say there were hills on this ride? It gets ugly. At 110 miles and approximately 10,000 feet into this ride, for the people without a compact crank or a triple, it got ugly. And the bad news? This was the climb going in. You have to descend a 12-percent grade on the other side then climb back out of the hole to get home.
