Leaving from El Cajon, this ride warms up with a moderate climb up Dehesa Road as it winds up toward the real challenge of the ride: the gnarly Viejas Grade. This is a 6-mile dirt road climb that will test your legs and improve your handling skills. Get ready for a lesson in choosing the right line: you’ll be forced to look ahead and up, rather than directly down at the road in front of you. This route tackles Viejas clockwise; the road is less steep from the counter-clockwise approach, but descending in that direction is not advisable. This route includes a short stretch on the shoulder of I-8 (on which bicycles are allowed). There are freeway signs that direct westbound bicycles to exit at E. Willows Rd.

The "JB Ride"

Location: 32.745125°, -116.928349°
The pre-ride chatter is standard no matter which group ride you drop in on. So named after Joe Bell, a locally renowned bike painter who founded the ride, this group leaves from 2512 Jamacha Road (El Cajon) on Sundays -- ready to ride by 8:15 am. JB's motto is "start slow and taper", but there tends to be a little 'game on' climbing Dehesa.

That's the owner of Speedplay in front of us. Nice guy, likes to attack early on Dehesa.

Small groups splinter off from here. Some go to Janet's Coffee Shop in Alpine, others do the Great Western Loop, still others ride Viejas Grade.

The loop as shown climbs the grade clockwise. You probably DON'T want to descend this road counterclockwise on a road bike.

Viejas Grade is a dirt road climb. Hence, the dirt.
