This across-the-Bay classic is a beautiful ride (though less so in the fog) and not nearly as difficult as people expect it to be. It's a climbing route to be sure, but the outstanding San Francisco Bay views make it worth every pedal stroke.
Ride across the bridge after 3:30 pm (or on the weekends) and the west side will be open for cyclists. All other times, cyclists must run "The Gauntlet" (crossing with pedestrians and cyclists heading in both directions).
The climb up the Headlands isn't nearly as bad as it appears. The first bit is steep, the middle is only 4-6%, and the last third is a bit stiffer. If you’re intimidated by steep downhills, avoiding the descent on the backside of Headlands may be advisable. The road is one-way (so you don't have to worry about approaching traffic), but the grade is generally above 12% and at times goes above 20%. Exercise caution and descend at your own pace.
A final challenging climb awaits on the backside of the Headlands at the fork in Bunker Road. To avoid this climb, go straight on Bunker and return via the tunnel. Cyclists don't have to wait for the light to turn green, but be sure to hit the “Cyclist Alert” button to the right when entering the tunnel.
