King, NC: Hanging Rock State Park

This 2-mile climb up into North Carolina’s Sauratown Mountains is a good challenge… the first time around. Ride it three times for a solid hill repeat workout.

Hanging Rock State Park and the Sauratown Mountains are nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the park, you’ll discover sheer cliffs and peaks of bare rock as well as quiet forests, cascading waterfalls, and expansive views of the Piedmont Plateau. Along with hiking, boating, rock climbing and rappelling you will find one of the most popular cycling hill climbs in the area. Start this ride at the Food Lion Shopping Center just outside of King, NC for a good 11-mile warm-up. The climb itself starts in Hanging Rock and averages between 6-8% (with stretches of 10-12%) for a 2-mile climb. Thanks to the grade and distance, this climb is well-suited to hill repeats, but a low gearing is recommended. The prominent peaks in the Sauratown range rise from 1,700 feet to more than 2,500 feet in elevation and stand in bold contrast to the surrounding countryside. The highest point in the park - and the highest point in the Sauratown Mountain range - is Moore's Knob. It rises to 2,579 feet (786 meters) above sea level.
