Austin, TX: Barton Creek Loop

There's great riding in Texas, but there are two things you don’t get very often: hills and scenery. This ride has a bit of both.

This is a great ride for some wonderful scenery and good hill training. There is a mixture of steep slopes for power training along with a quick descent and some longer, slower slopes. These roads are in good shape, most have nice shoulders (also a rarity in some areas of Texas). Start and finish at La Quinta Hotel on Mopac (Hwy 1). For some extra miles take a left on 360 and ride to the bridge (over the Colorado River) and back – this adds about 8-9 miles to the route. This area of Austin is popular amongst cyclists (most ride on weekend mornings) so most drivers are pretty courteous. It’s a very popular cycle route so you’ll meet some great people if you’re open to hooking up with other riders. After the ride go for a walk along the Barton Creek Greenbelt; follow the trail for 3/4 mile for some great swimming and waterfalls.
