The first section of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway curves through pleasant woodland for about 10 miles until arriving at ‘mile high curve,’ which provides a spectacular view over the confluence of two steep valleys. As far as the rest of this ride goes, the word ‘epic’ is an understatement. The valley and mountain views seem to one-up each other around every corner. To be sure, this ride has its fair share of climbing, but it’s not short on descents either: the final 20 miles are mostly downhill—a nice way to finish off. This ride starts in Oakhurst, but for a shorter route, Bass Lake or North Fork (the geographic center of California) can serve as starting points as well. The route can be further shortened by turning left at Grizzly Road rather than continuing to the out-and-back turnaround point up at Minarets Work Center. However long your ride, be sure to bring enough food and fluid for a long day in the saddle (a camelback would be a good idea) as there aren’t many opportunities to refuel along the way. This route was designated a Scenic Byway in 1991.
