Moraine Hills State Park’s broad, crushed-limestone trails swerve in and out of marshland and up and down kettle moraines. Take either a ‘cross or mountain bike, and test your fitness on the climbs and your attention on the constant curves. Pause the roller coaster once in a while to appreciate the sounds of silence so near to Chicago.
Some of the hills (especially steeper ones) are paved to prevent erosion, as is the entire River Road Trail. Most of the loop trails are one-way, so be sure to follow the trail signs and travel in the right direction. I recommend taking the River Road Trail southeast to the center of the three loops, then taking Leatherleaf Bog Trail (counterclockwise), Lake Defiance Trail (clockwise), and finishing with the Fox River Trail (counterclockwise).
