This ride roams the dry areas of the Big Island and loops back via the Kona Ironman course. Wind and heat can be extreme, so take sunscreen and plenty to drink. As you leave Kailua Kona, the road shoulders are plentiful, but so is the traffic. Climbing begins on Hwy 190 through Kalaoa, and then ramps up again on Kohala Mountain Road. The rest of the trip to Kapa'au is downhill through beautiful ranchlands with fantastic island views. For a shorter route (about 70 miles), keep west on Hwy 19 after leaving Waimea, and cut over to the western shore for the return trip south on Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. Public transportation is also available.

Rock Graffiti

As you ride over lava flows on the Kona Coast, you'll notice rock graffiti everywhere. Defacing the lava rock is forbidden, so people write messages in white coral.
Highway 19
Location: 19.948985°, -155.832138°
Hwy 19 has a huge shoulder -- big enough for cyclists to ride three-up. Unfortunately, glass and debris are common (as are crosswinds).
Puako Bay
Location: 19.982061°, -155.829392°
Puako Bay: The beach here is less crowded than others on the Kohala Coast.

Hapuna Beach Park is quite popular.
Spencer Beach County Park
Location: 20.022387°, -155.821838°
Spencer Beach County Park: If you enjoy camping next to the ocean, you can pitch a tent (and take a shower) here -- a great alternative to the expensive hotels in noisy Kona.
Pu'ukohala National Historic Site

Settle in for the long haul, but stand up to stretch your legs every now and then.
Hawi
Location: 20.236751°, -155.835915°
Hawi is a touristy little artist enclave. Stop for an ice cream cone, and be sure to fuel up for the next 22 miles.
Road conditions
Location: 20.152975°, -155.809994°
The road down to the coast from the Kohala Mountains has no shoulder, but the traffic is light. Maui's Haleakala Crater is visible in the distance.

Kohala Mountain loop
Location: 20.035935°, -155.711289°

Heading into Waimea

A mile before town, the highway ends and so does the shoulder -- use caution. Mahalo.
