When unpredictable winter weather makes long road rides questionable, it’s a good idea to plan your routes with ways to cut the ride short and high tail it back home. This route does just that—if the weather looks bad, just cut off the last loop. But you’ll miss the namesake roads on the far loop: Hoots Road is flat and fast, and Nellie Road is a short but sweet climbing fest.
This ride leaves from Lewisville, on the western edge of Winston-Salem, and heads west onto rural roads through farm and horse country. There’s plenty of pastoral scenery to enjoy while you ride tempo over the endless rollers. The longest climb is about a mile long.
You could ride far in this area and never see a place to stop for a snack (the same isn’t true of country dogs), but this route has a great stop 32 miles in--the Old Stage Grill. The grill has good coffee, old-fashioned candy, and plenty of room to warm up and plan your next ride.

Chad: "The ride had it all: climbs, flats, and rogue dogs."

It started raining harder while we were inside, so we got going. Nobody wanted to leave the bikes in the rain any longer than we had to. After all, they cost more than divorce.

Charlie: "I think that was one of the best cups of coffee I ever had. Was it because of the cold, damp weather, or that the coffee was just that good?"

For three days prior, we had record-breaking highs in the 70s and 80s. This morning we had temperatures in the 40s with wind and rain. This country grill was a nice relief from the weather with 15 miles to go.

Our bikes, parked outside of the Old Stage Grill: This parking lot probably sees more pick-up trucks and tractors than bikes, but the grill was bike friendly.
