Starting from Mike’s Bikes right off the Sausalito Bike Path, this tranquil out-and-back from Marin to Fairfax rolls along a popular cycling route north of San Francisco. Just about any longer ride will start on this route and then extend further north over Whites Hill into Nicasio Valley and beyond, so a coffee stop in Fairfax is de rigueur. In particular the Fat Angel Bakery and the Fairfax Roastery are crowded with groups of cyclists on the weekend. Stop in for an espresso and try to hitch on for a longer ride. The scenery is in this area is wonderful, particularly the beautiful houses along Shady Lane. There are a lot of turns along the way, but keep an eye out for the “Bike Route” signs, which will help you stay on track. With the exception of rush hour, traffic is minimal, and on weekends there’s a good chance you’ll have plenty of two-wheeled company. If you ride the path over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin, you’ll tack on about 8 miles each way.
