Start your ride in Mariposa, a picturesque town at the foot of the Sierras. The cool Merced river will be a welcome sight after crossing Midpines summit. Follow the river, pass two campgrounds before arriving at El Portal. Spanish for "gateway", El Portal is the central entrance to the park and has the easiest grade of the three. Traffic Warning: the only part of this route with any shoulder is the section of HWY 49 (starting in Oakhurst) and HWY 140 to Briceburg. Both of the one way roads in the west end of Yosemite valley are beautiful and open to cyclists, but are somewhat hazardous due to the lack of shoulders and tourists looking to snap photos of waterfalls and bears.

Oakhurst didn't always have cheezy tourist props.

The town was settled in the 1850's by people who saw 'gold' in supplying thousands of miners with all their provisional supplies. It was built with permanence in mind and not a temporary camp that just happened to survive.
