Salem, NY: Tour of the Battenkill 2008

The infamous Battenkill-Roubaix of 2008 charges 55 miles up and over lung-searing climbs on frame-rattling dirt roads in upstate New York. The ride is beautiful, albeit brutal.

The Tour of Battenkill, aka Battenkill-Roubaix, is one of the largest and most unusual races in the U.S. It’s also a fantastic route any time of year, assuming you’re a fan of backcountry roads and grunting climbs.

Extended sections on dirt and gravel roads are the signature of this ride. Starting in Salem, the route powers through off-road-like stretches on Juniper Swamp Road, Meeting House Road, and Ferguson Road (among others) as it loops through several upstate New York hamlets (any are well-suited for giving your aching back a rest) on the way back to Salem. You won’t find Roubaix-style cobbles on this ride, but by ride’s end, you’ll feel as embattled as any Classics rider.
