Just before the gated trailhead, turn right to climb a rocky doubletrack for 1.4 miles to an overlook of the Colorado River and the top of the hike-a-bike down to Horsethief Bench. Ride the 3.6-mile loop clockwise: skirt beneath the orange sandstone cliff to your left, then ride rock-dotted singletrack near the cliff’s edge above the river. On the western end, turn northeast up a drainage and pick up hard-packed singletrack beneath the cliffs. Return up the hike-a-bike and rumble back down the two-track road past piñon pine to the trailhead.
Rating: Intermediate. The doubletrack climb is a short but stiff, and the rocky southwestern half of the loop has nice technical tests. Watch for tube-piercing prickly pear.
TO TRAILHEAD: I-70 W to exit 15. Turn left onto 13 Road/CO 139 N (toward Loma/Rangely). In .1 mile, turn right onto HawkEye Road. Follow .8 mile to parking area for the Kokopelli Trailhead.
