Organized by cycling advocacy group Bike New York, the Commerce Bank Five Boro Bike Tour rambles from lower Manhattan to the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens before cruising over the Verrazano to a post-ride party in Staten Island. With a rider tally of 30,000, it’s the largest organized ride in the country, and for good reason: The city shuts down more than 40 miles of road, paths, and freeways (including FDR Drive, the Belt Parkway, and the BQE) for the ride, making it truly traffic-free--a rarity in New York.

The Five Boro is held annually on the first Sunday in May and usually fills at least a month in advance, so register early.
Tip: Take it easy until the crowd starts to thin out at Central Park, but even then, expect the unexpected from the rider in front of you. Keep an eye out for tricky expansion joints along the way and cross at a safe angle.
