STAGE 8
With big mountains waiting in the wings, the "short" 108-mile stage to Toulouse presents the peloton with another "not-so-flat" flat stage. Rolling over the plains north of the Pyrenees, the stage is set for yet another battle between the breakaway and the field-sprint protagonists.
The day's mild categorized climbs come near the beginning of the course, setting things up nicely for the green jersey competitors to vie for top points at the finish line. But with three of the sport's premiere sprinters--Tom Boonen, Alessandro Petacchi, and Daniele Bennati--missing from the 2008 race and fewer strong lead-out trains in the peloton, there may be more teams interested in winning breaks than chasing them down.
