STAGE 18
By the time the peloton rolls out from Bourg-d'Oisans on stage 18, the Tour de France may have already been decided--or not. There are some mountains on tap for this stage: how decisive these climbs prove to be depends on how significant time gaps near the top of the general classification are.
An early break has an excellent shot at staying away for the entire race as much of the peloton will be worn out from the day before. Overall contenders may be content to ride in the peloton over the day's major climb, the Croix de Montvieux, but any man within minutes of the yellow jersey will be virtually forced to attack here. Stage 19 looks to be a day for the sprinters and stage 21 is basically a parade into Paris. Anyone hoping to gain time before the stage 20 time trial may have to go kamikaze on this stage.
Hey, it worked for Floyd... sort of.
