Ogden, UT: Ben Lomond Peak via North Skyline Trail
Climbing nearly 4,000 feet to a Wasatch summit overlooking Ogden, this 16-mile out-and-back challenges with multiple switchbacks and a mix of steady and steep exposed terrain.
This route begins at the North Odgen Divide Trailhead, 6,170 feet above sea level and about 2.5 miles east of the city along North Ogden Canyon Road.
The first stretch of trail has sections of small, loose rock and traverses 10 switchback corners—a few of them technically challenging—in its first three miles. The grueling 9 percent grade continues for another mile before the trail crosses to the western side of the ridge. There the climb eases and the mountain falls away for exceptional views of Ogden and the Great Salt Lake. The exposure here isn’t vertical, so although it makes for a thrilling ride, it isn’t scary.
If you're feeling tired, turn around at the North Skyline Trail’s highest point, a marked junction below Ben Lomond Peak. Those looking to extend their ride can hike-a-bike the steep 1.5-mile trail 1,100 feet to the summit before retracing their route to the trailhead.
