Don’t overlook the 2.3-mile ride that runs up and down the juniper-dotted slopes of Pilot Butte, a cinder cone that rises up from the middle of Bend. The 1.1-mile climb to the top gains roughly 500 feet of elevation (averaging an 8 percent grade) and rewards with climactic summit views that stretch across Bend to the Cascades.
Start at the entrance to Pilot Butte State Park and follow the park’s two-lane road up and around the volcano. The terrain levels slightly as the road rounds Pilot Butte’s southern slopes, but steepens at mile 0.4 for the remainder of the summit climb. Take a quick break at the top to scope out the panoramas, then cruise back down to the bottom. You want a hill repeat, you got it.
