From Andy Hampsten, winner of the 1988 Giro d'Italia: At the top of the climb, you'll have a view of Left Hand Canyon and the Front Range. Then there's a near freefall down the gravel section of Sunshine Canyon before you hit the steep paved grades into Boulder.

START: Downtown Boulder at Boulder Canyon Dr. (Hwy. 119) and 9th Street Take the Boulder Creek bike path for 3 miles up Boulder Canyon--there are several short dirt sections Right on Fourmile Canyon Rd. Right on Gold Run Rd. (follow signs for Salina/Gold Hill); the first 2 miles are paved, then you'll ride 4 miles of dirt to Gold Hill Right on Sunshine Canyon Dr. END: Ride a short, steep hill and follow Sunshine Canyon Dr. back to Boulder (3 miles dirt, 6 miles pavement)

Take a break from the climbing before tackling the final pitch up Sunshine Canyon Drive. Refuel at the Gold Hill Store or take a gander at the historic Gold Hill Inn. To the north, Lickskillet Drive offers a dirt bailout down a very steep grade (15-18%) to Lefthand Canyon Drive.
