The Tour kicks off its second day in the Pyrenees with a bang: from the gun, the route climbs the Category 1 ascent up Port d’Evira Lira. This 14.4-mile climb will likely launch a large breakaway group of unlikely GC contenders that will subsequently whittle down over the next two big climbs of the day. The stage ends with a long descent on the backside of Col de Agnès. The overall contenders will likely scope each other throughout the day, looking for weaknesses to take advantage of during the next day's big ascent of Tourmalet.
Stage 8 may very well go to a sturdy one-day rider like Columbia’s rising star Tony Martin, but an opportunist with a time-trialing engine (like Garmin’s Danny Pate) could get away with a big move on the final descent.
