Stage 13 to Colmar presents the peloton with a tricky challenge: it has the make-up of a minor day in the mountains, but the spacing of the final climbs (including a fast, 21-kilometer descent to the finish) may present a chance for a shakeup in the overall standings.

An early break has a decent chance of staying away on this stage, and if the peloton misjudges its efforts, don’t be surprised to see a lesser known rider seize the yellow jersey. The 5.3-mile, 7-percent grade up Col du Plazerweisel may dislodge some of the race favorites: if so, hold on tight for a thrilling finish to the day. If anyone is gapped at the top of Plazerweisel, they’ll have to take some chances on the descent to catch back on before the final climbs of the day. Don’t be surprised to see Astana hold back riders from the breakaway should a Contador-like rider unleash an attack on Plazerweisel and need assistance on the run-in to the finish. Stage 14 is a transition day that offers a chance for recovery, so a GC contender taking a swing for the fences is entirely likely on this stage.
