Tour de France 2010: Stage 9 - Morzine-Avoriaz to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (July 13)
Following the first rest day, the first major alpine day is a 204.5km stage with four climbs. Riders climb to the Colombière mountain pass, cross into Savoie and the Aravis pass, followed by the Saisies pass. The final and most grueling challenge is the Madeleine pass 30km from the finish.
After a rest day in Morzine, Tour riders then attack their second significant Alpine stage. And with four major climbs packed into this 204.5-kilometer stage time gaps at the finish promise to be significant. But the hardest climb of the day, the legendary Madeleine Pass comes over 25 kilometers from the finish offering dropped riders at least some chance of returning.
Any rider with the yellow jersey will still have nearly two weeks of difficult racing awaiting them. And that’s a long way to go before Paris.
Note: Stage route, exact start/finish, and sprints/climbs have been approximated from information provided by LeTour.com. Actual stage may vary slightly.
