The early ascent of Rabbit Ears Pass is almost tailor-made for another KOM break, but it’s at best a bold bet to say that anyone striking out that early will survive for the stage win. After the long, gentle descent to Kremmling the route just climbs steadily and inexorably, with a final KOM at Swan Mountain around Dillon Reservoir. It’s not that steep, but the collective attrition of five days of racing at altitude could easily see a smallish pack of riders contesting a finish at Breckenridge. How small depends on how things go at the Swan Mountain KOM. That is the second real pressure point in the race, and the last chance for a challenger to make a move on GC. This stage will require a strong defense from the leader’s team.
