100 miles The full century sandwiches a 30-miles of steady climbing (and descending on the round trip) with two flat stretches in either direction. On the way, the route passes world-class golf courses, stately homes, fields of dry sagebrush and Cuyamaca State Park. The payoff? A stupendous lunch and slice of pie from Julian’s Café at the turn-around. 50 miles Blow past Alpine Rd. and head along I-8 en route to Hwy 79 and the ride’s main climb. Deserted two-lane roads await as you pound up this steady grade. Turn onto Riverside Dr. and refuel at Perkins General Store before heading back. 35 miles Head into Alpine and grab a scone and cup of joe from Janet’s Coffee Shop. The shortest option, this ride still offers a crack at the 1,000-foot climb up Dehesa Rd. Note: This route requires riders to ride along Interstate 8 for a short stretch. California law allows cyclists here, and the shoulder is extremely wide.

Climbing ahead

Location: 32.790053°, -116.845415°
Begin the first real climb--a 4.5-mile 1,000-ft. ascent.

If nature calls, turn right onto Japatul Rd., where minimal traffic and roadside bushes provide a bit of privacy.

35-mile turn-around

Location: 32.834741°, -116.760378°
Okay, so it's an odd number, but the short option is still worth every drop of sweat. Head to Janet's Coffee Shope(2506 Alpine Blvd.) for a scone and cup of joe, before turning around and heading back.

Interstate 8

Location: 32.837608°, -116.679182°
CHP will not stop you for riding on the Interstate here, but be careful of the large grates on the shoulder that can eat up your tires.

50-mile turn-around

Location: 32.852769°, -116.616011°
Okay, so it's a bit longer than 50-miles, but seriously, you deserve a cold gatorade and a snickers bar from Perkins Store, before you turning around for the return trip. Note: There are no public bathrooms available here, but there are a few porta-potties at the corner of Viejas Blvd. and River Drive.

Back on the road

Location: 32.853634°, -116.615839°

Descending Cuyamaca

Location: 32.915477°, -116.572495°
Local traffic is fairly accustomed to bike riders, but be careful, some turns are blind and sharper than you think.

Hwy 79 Summit

Location: 32.949911°, -116.577301°
On the return trip a screaming downhill stretch heading south on Hwy 79 starts here.

Julian's Cafe

Location: 33.077806°, -116.601462°
Perfect for a mid-way pit-stop before the return trip, Julian's Cafe is located at 2112 Main St.
