There are beautiful views of the river and dramatic cliff overhangs around almost every corner on this out and back ride from Townsend, TN to the Sugarland Visitors Center. As you ride upriver from Townsend the first dozen miles or so are a false flat with grades in the 1-3% range, then the road tips up for a mile or two of steeper climbing before plunging down the last three miles to Sugarlands. That makes for a stiff climb in the first part of the return followed by sixteen miles of downhill. The road can be busy during tourist season, especially in the afternoon, so this is a good ride to do early in the day. Most of the route is shady, so it would work well for a hot summer day.
