Hailed by locals as one of the most scenic stretches of Highway 1, the 22-mile ride between Pescadero and Davenport can be executed in several ways: as a 22-mile one-way ride (using a shuttle car) or as a 44-46-mile out-and-back (depending on whether you opt for the Swanton Loop—see below).

From Pescadero State Beach, this swath of Highway 1 runs right along the Pacific at points and further inland at others. Wind is a way of life on Highway 1: more often than not, a tailwind escorts riders riding from north to south, but it's not unheard of for it to go the other way. Tailwind or not, this ride is better savored than hammered.

Take advantage of short detours along the way to visit one the U.S.'s tallest lighthouses (at Pigeon Point), the world's largest mainland breeding ground for elephant seals (at Año Nuevo State Natural Reserve), towering redwoods (just up Canyon Road at Waddell Creek), and kite surfers hanging on for dear life (at Scott Creek). Stop in at the Davenport Roadhouse for coffee or lunch, or just grab a quick snack from the Davenport Store. On the return trip north, an optional climbing detour up Swanton Road offers shelter from the wind, dropping you back down to Highway 1 about 16 miles south of Pescadero.

Points of Interest

Pescadero State Beach

Location: 37.259828°, -122.413487°
Parking is available at Pescadero State Beach, but there is a day fee. You may be able to find free local parking further up Pescadero Creek Road in Pescadero proper.

Pigeon Point Light Station

Location: 37.181963°, -122.394218°
One of the tallest light houses in the U.S., Pigeon Point Light Station is well worth a short detour off the main route. The lighthouse keeper's housing has been restored as a hostel, so Pigeon Point is a great alternative for those riding a longer chunk of Highway 1 and looking to break up the trip.

Año Nuevo State Reserve

Location: 37.124431°, -122.308645°
Another short and worthwhile detour, Año Nuevo State Natural Reserve is the largest mainland breeding site in the world for the northern elephant seal.

Redwoods Detour

Location: 37.095631°, -122.277188°
For an 8.6-mile detour up into redwood country, take Canyon Road as it follows Waddell Creek up toward Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

Scott Creek

Location: 37.040551°, -122.228973°
Keep an eye out for kite-surfers holding on for dear life as you roll by Scott Creek.

Ocean View Turnout

Location: 37.011600°, -122.196035°
Pull over to the ocean-side of the road in Davenport and enjoy amazing Pacific views. If you have the shoes for it, consider following the foot trails out toward the edge of the bluffs.

Davenport Store

Location: 37.011514°, -122.195601°
A chance to stock up on carbs and top off your bottles before turning back north on Highway 1

Davenport Roadhouse Inn

Location: 37.010855°, -122.193820°
Stop in at the Davenport Roadhouse for a mid- or pre-ride coffee, or to stay the night if you're tackling a longer stretch along Highway 1.

Swanton Loop

Location: 37.028595°, -122.216393°
If you're getting hammered with headwinds on the return trip north, consider ducking right onto Swanton Road for a climbing detour that's a bit sheltered from the coastal winds. The one big climb at the north end of Swanton Road averages 7.8 percent for 1 mile. Alternatively, you could ride the Swanton Loop on the way down to Davenport if the winds are heading north.
