This advanced-level ride is jam-packed with technical challenges and in its first 3 miles as it climbs more than 800 feet from the trailhead to a vista overlooking Rattlesnake Canyon. After climbing the dirt road from the Kokopelli Trailhead, take your first singletrack option to the right, following the base of the hills to the marked beginning of the Moore Fun Trail. The thigh-burning 2-mile climb begins (and ends) with a series of tight, technical switchbacks full of steep rock steps and ledges. Take a recovery stop at the ridge-top overlook before the 0.5-mile traverse along the cliff edge toward the ridge’s northernmost point—expect at least one hike-a-bike switchback before the real downhill begins. Watch your speed on the descent as the trail switchbacks and turns northwest toward a saddle and the junction with Mary’s Loop at mile 4.8. The last several miles of the loop follow the dirt-road doubletrack back to the trailhead.

Though this description follows the trail clockwise (from east to west), Moore Fun is also regularly ridden as an out-and-back or as an advanced eastbound return from Mary’s Loop.

Points of Interest

MOR001

Location: 39.177533°, -108.827369°
From the Kokopelli Trailhead parking lot, climb south on the gravel road towards the beginning of Kokopelli's Trail.

MOR002

Location: 39.177150°, -108.831511°
Turn right onto singletrack, heading downhill into the valley and following the well-developed trail as it curves left up ahead. A carsonite post marks the beginning of the Moore Fun's advanced-level trail.

MOR003

Location: 39.179612°, -108.840179°
This sharp switchback marks the end of the first mile and the beginning of an up-and-down stretch of switchbacks. If you're riding this trail in the opposite direction (west to east) be sure to slow yourself on the downhill before this potentially dangerous curve.

MOR004

Location: 39.185101°, -108.845501°
A quarter-mile recovery flat precedes this series of switchbacking turns toward the top of the ridge. The trail ahead has many steep, rocky steps and technical challenges that will be unrideable for most.

MOR005

Location: 39.183936°, -108.850651°
The ride's most difficult climb ends at its 5,398-foot high point on the ridge above the Colorado River. Look south and east toward Fruita, and look for other riders on Mary's Loop or the Horsethief Bench below.

MOR006

Location: 39.186631°, -108.857431°
Stop at this viewpoint on the edge of the ridge before following the top of the cliffside downhill. Tight rocky switchbacks characterize this difficult segment of trail and you'll lose more than 600 feet in the next mile or so of downhill. Big switchbacks at the bottom of the ridge help to mellow the descent toward the Mary's Loop junction.

MOR007

Location: 39.197440°, -108.858633°
Just before mile 5 the Moore Fun trail ends. Turn right to follow this route downhill to the frontage road or consider a U-turn for a challenging out-and-back Moore Fun exclusive. The BLM map posted here offers another option: returning on Mary's Loop.

MOR008

Location: 39.199220°, -108.858268°
Turn right at the T-junction onto the dirt frontage road. The last 2.4 miles follow this road back toward the trailhead.

Technical Climb

One of the many technical uphill stretches on Moore Fun. This one is easier than most as it might be rideable if you watch out for your pedals. © Gene Poncelet

Switchback

Location: 39.186348°, -108.857024°
This exposed and technical switchback near the ridge's north end will make most riders dismount and walk downhill. The cliff at the turn's edge drops more than 100 feet. © Gene Poncelet

End of Moore Fun
