Tour de France 2010: Stage 3 - Wanze to Arenberg Porte du Hainaut (July 6)
The most frantic day of the Tour, with 7 cobbled sectors totaling 13 kilometers. All told it will be 213 nervy km in the saddle for those in the GC hunt. Starting among the rolling hills of the Belgian Ardennes, this stage finishes at the entrance to the legendary Arenberg Trench of Paris-Roubaix.
After climbing some of the historic climbs of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic, Tour riders will then be handed a mini-Paris-Roubaix as stage three finishes over some of the treacherous cobblestone roads covered during the classic otherwise known as the “Hell of the North.”
Already when the Tour covered a brief 3.9-kilometers of cobbles in the 2004 Tour it cost Iban Mayo, one of the pre-race favorites, precious time he would never recover. This year, the race will cover 13.2 kilometers. All the Tour de France favorites know that on this stage, more than any, they can lose the Tour due to crashes, mechanical failures or an array of factors otherwise known as bad luck.
Alberto Contador and other Tour favorites have already visited the cobbled sections this spring in an effort to eye possible trappings. Contador himself rode with retired Paris-Roubaix champ Peter Van Petegem. Unfortunately he will not be able to rely on good old “Van Pet” when the Tour comes to town.
Note: Stage route, exact start/finish, and sprints/climbs have been approximated from information provided by LeTour.com. Actual stage may vary slightly.
