Hills return as the race enters the Massif Central Mountains in what promises to be a memorable stage to Mende. It was here that Frenchman Laurent Jalabert culminated his epic breakaway over Miguel Indurain in 1995. The final climb to the Mende airstrip, now appropriately named the “Laurent Jalabert Climb” is short (only three kilometers). But averaging over a 10% grade, it sure is steep.
After a non-stop day of climbing and descending fireworks are assured on the final pitch. It was here that Alberto Contador assured victory in the Paris-Nice race in both 2007 and 2010, and it is here where the Spaniard will attempt to make a significant move against his opponents. If the two-time Tour winner is not already in yellow, he well could be by the finish on this day.
