Bicycling Magazine Tour de France 2010: Stage 17 - Pau to Col du Tourmalet (July 22)

The Tourmalet, citadel of the Pyrenees, plays a starring role on the 100th anniversary of its first Tour appearance and promises a nasty mountaintop finish. This 174km stage ascends the steepest side uphill from Barèges following the climb of the Marie-Blanque and Soulor passes.

The final stage in the Pyrenees promises to be epic as the Tour returns to the Tourmalet--the first mountain pass in Tour history--for a second time in two days. But this time the race finishes on the climb. In addition, the riders will attack two reputed climbs prior to the Tourmalet, the Marie-Blanc and Soulor Pass, so count on serious time gaps at the finish.

In his prime Lance Armstrong often used the Tourmalet to construct his Tour de France victories. Will he use it this year to complete his comeback? Riders will use the western approach, which is not as steep but is longer and holds more climbing overall. It’s also remarkably consistent in grade and has long straight stretches, which should reward tempo-style climbers chasing down punchier attackers. As the race’s final mountaintop finish, it’s also the last chance for challengers to dislodge the leader.

Note: Stage route, exact start/finish, and sprints/climbs have been approximated from information provided by LeTour.com. Actual stage may vary slightly.
